Residents and community leaders from the East End told the Houston City Council on April 6 they oppose a planned abandonment of several Polk Street rights-of-way and asked the council to deny or delay the proposal to allow more community engagement.
Speakers said the proposed abandonment would sever transportation links between the East End and downtown and that previous infrastructure decisions have isolated neighborhoods and worsened health and economic outcomes. Ed Pettit, Camden Kirkland and others asked the council for more time to negotiate with Houston First and other stakeholders to ensure alternatives and compensatory measures before any rights are relinquished.
Councilmembers acknowledged the concerns and said the issues warrant careful review; one councilmember urged a ride-along and more direct engagement so elected officials can understand neighborhood daily conditions. The council did not vote on abandonment at the meeting; staff briefings and additional public input were requested.
