Pflugerville approves new playgrounds at Murchison and Cambridge Estates parks

Staff presented item 5K (Murchison Park) and 5L (Cambridge Estates Park). City parks staff (Shane) said the work at the older Murchison playground can be accomplished more cost‑effectively by city procurement (co‑ops) than by the vendor markup included in the original contract; staff said that approach reduces vendor markup and saves funds while allowing the city to purchase the same playground elements. For Cambridge Estates Park staff said the existing playground is roughly 17 years old and the proposed $213,432 package includes new play equipment, natural play elements such as rope climbers and rock features, and preservation of an existing shade canopy.
Shane said design choices are informed by the city’s playground master plan and by previous public engagement used across multiple playground projects. Councilmembers asked that staff continue outreach to homeowners associations and neighbors in advance of construction and said neighborhood input on age‑appropriate elements and seating should be encouraged. Staff said they will notify HOAs and park neighbors as a courtesy and will continue to use the adopted master plan and safety standards when installing equipment.
The council approved the purchases and directed staff to proceed with implementation.
