Tenants press council for eviction protections ahead of Renters Day

Tenant advocates and residents used the second public-comment period on April 8 to urge the council to make immediate commitments on eviction protections, moratoriums against "remodel eviction" tactics and broader tenant-support measures ahead of the city's upcoming Renters Day observance.
Sanai Kenfei (listed on the speaker roster) said tenants lack security and called for an interim policy or moratorium to protect renters from displacement. "There really is no sense of security. It feels like the issue is either being pushed out or ignored," the speaker said, noting personal experiences with repeated court proceedings to retain housing.
A speaker identified as Mia read from an earlier council item recognizing Renters Day and told the council that seven years after the resolution, families remain priced out and evictions are a leading cause of homelessness. "Use Renters Day to make clear public commitments for tenants," Mia said, asking when remodel-eviction measures and rent-control priorities will be placed on the council agenda.
Rick Meza (also listed as Eric in the clerk's roll-call of speakers) described a local landlord's repeated use of 60-day notices and alleged retaliation after tenants challenged rent increases, and asked the council for stronger, permanent protections to prevent displacement.
