Bexar County approves Daily Docket Café to run Justice Center concessions

Bexar County Commissioners Court on April 8 approved a five-year license with Daily Docket Café, a new LLC formed by operators of Smashin' Crab/Podbelly, to provide concessions in the Justice Center basement outside the central jury room. The contract sets base rent at $5,000 per month, includes two renewal options and requires the vendor to maintain kitchen equipment and fire-suppression systems.

The county said the vendor will open a limited menu beginning May 12 after a transition beginning April 25. Facilities Director Dan Curry told the court the vendor will focus on “hot and cold grab-and-go items” and made-to-order breakfast and lunch, including vegetarian and vegan choices. The county will fund merchandising and furniture upgrades for the space using rental revenue.

During a short presentation, co‑owners and managers described plans for a barista station, made-to-order options and periodic special events. Pablo Felix, who said he is a chef with the operator group, told commissioners the vendor will provide menu variety, while Isabella Maya, named as the café’s general manager, said she will prioritize customer service and staff outreach.

Commissioners noted past complaints about long lines during jury sessions and asked Facilities staff and the vendor to coordinate service flow with central jury operations to avoid congestion. The court approved the agreement on a voice vote; the vendor will recruit current cafeteria staff and post internal positions immediately.

The agreement also requires the vendor to offer a 10% employee discount and to make the menu available online for preorders and future delivery to offices inside the courthouse.
