Oroville Arts Commission names State Theater organization winner and selects David Tomori as individual recipient

The Oroville Arts Commission selected State Theater as this year’s organization winner for the Your Voice for the Arts award and chose Commissioner David Tomori as the individual recipient during an emergency meeting; the organization award passed unanimously and the individual award passed with three votes in favor and one recusal.
The awards program, established several years ago to spotlight local arts activity, allows two categories: one organization and one individual. Commissioners discussed several nominees for the organization award, including the State Theater and Notes and Nots. Commissioners praised the State Theater’s volunteer base, restoration work and recent programming that included a music festival bringing fifth-graders and junior-high ensembles together with the high school band.
Commissioner Andy Krantz, who presented the nomination for Tomori, said he nominated Tomori for “his dedication to the arts” and cited Tomori’s work at Brush Strokes, his years as an art teacher and his service as chair of the Arts Commission. Commissioner Rayon said, “I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for Mr. Tomori’s class 25 years ago,” describing Tomori’s longtime role mentoring students and community members through public art projects.
Commissioners also discussed other nominees. Alfreda Flint was nominated as an individual for long-time community arts organizing, including storefront and festival work; Notes and Nots and Artists of Rivertown were discussed among organization nominees for community programming and youth classes.
On procedure, Commissioner Tomori recused himself from the individual award vote; the record shows three votes in favor of Tomori and one recusal. The record shows a unanimous vote for State Theater as the organization award recipient. Commissioners said they plan to promote nominees even when they do not win so community members learn about local arts activity.
The commission moved on after completing the awards votes and turned to public-art projects later in the meeting.
