Benton County forms regional housing committee, begins outreach to state and local partners

The Benton County Planning Commission received an update on a regional housing initiative that staff and a newly identified committee are socializing with local and state partners.
Commissioner Richard (Rick) Fulford delivered the update, describing a committee established in February and a March charge to "develop communications content strategy." Fulford said the county is preparing a compact "fast fact" sheet and a website hub to gather project summaries and data. He emphasized the region’s high rent burden—presentation slides shown at the meeting flagged Corvallis and Benton County among Oregon communities with a large share of households spending more than 50% of income on rent.
Fulford said the county has met or queued meetings with a range of partners: Oregon State University representatives, nonprofit housing advocates (a speaker cited Thousand Friends and Sightline), developers of compact housing projects, and state agencies including the governor’s office and DLCD. He described outreach planned across adjacent counties referenced in the meeting (Linn, Lane, Lincoln, Polk and neighboring counties) because commuting and housing markets cross jurisdictional borders.
Commissioners and staff discussed connecting the county’s regional work to state rulemaking and funding opportunities related to the statute mentioned in the meeting as "1537." Staff said they are tracking DLCD rule development and that administrative rules are not yet finalized.
Commissioners asked staff to broaden contact lists to include affordable‑housing investors, public housing partners and nonprofits that can bring capital and technical assistance. Fulford and staff asked commissioners to share additional stakeholder names and said they expect the committee’s socialization phase to continue while the county builds a public information package and a set of meetings to prioritize actions.
