Trustees outline new policy committee and hold first readings on multiple policies including AI and facilities use

The Lakeside Union Elementary District Board of Trustees discussed forming a standing policy committee and held first readings for several new or revised policies at the meeting.

Board leadership said the policy committee will develop a framework for reviewing existing policies, address legal changes and create an ongoing review cadence. The board indicated the committee will include district staff and trustees, will require substantial work and likely meet at least quarterly. Trustees said the committee could consist of up to two board members and additional staff; the board president said she would confer with an absent trustee (Andrew Hayes) to finalize committee membership.

The board conducted first readings of these items: board policy 5131 (student conduct), board policy 7310 (use/aiming of facilities — a new, standalone facilities use policy), administrative regulation 3542 (school bus drivers), board policy and administrative regulation 5131.6 (alcohol and other drugs), and board policy 0441 (artificial intelligence). Trustees described 7310 and 0441 as new policies for the district that previously existed only as short provisions and will now be standalone policies.

Why it matters: Creating a policy committee centralizes review and updates to district governance documents and ensures legal and operational changes are considered. First readings do not represent final adoption; they are the first formal step in the board’s policy process.

The board asked for volunteers to serve and signaled the committee’s work will include outside legal review where required, but no formal membership or schedule was adopted at the meeting.
