Mendon library director says budget is on track; Wi‑Fi upgraded, new card fees start in January

The Mendon Library Board heard a director's report Oct. 24 that said the library’s operating budget is on track and that a recent technology upgrade has expanded wireless access.
Library Director Jesse reported the library came in “under budget on our salaries,” and said the library was reimbursed by the Utah Education Network for $4,098 spent on Wi‑Fi upgrades. “There’s this spaceship‑looking thing up in the ceiling that throws Wi‑Fi out to the parking lot, the playground, all around,” Jesse said, adding the device provides free wireless access for patrons.
The board was told a new schedule of library card fees will take effect Jan. 1. Jesse and other board members said the board will finalize related details before the start date.
Jesse reviewed staffing and volunteers: a new volunteer, Kaylee Jensen, will work on the library’s computer systems and data updates, and “Elder Smith” will help with Wednesday morning story time and computer assistance. The director also reviewed seasonal programming: Halloween activities will run Oct. 31 from about 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., including crafts, costume judging and candy distribution; board members asked for volunteer sign‑ups to staff craft tables and other stations.
Board Treasurer Kim reminded trustees that the books are available for review in the library’s small office. Jesse said the library’s summer staffing costs typically rise when seasonal employees return and that current underspending on salaries helped offset that.
The director briefed the board on recent fundraising and donations and on circulation and programming impacts tied to the technology and volunteer support. No formal motions or votes were taken on the items reported.
Board members asked that the library finalize any outstanding operational details—including the precise fee schedule and volunteer sign‑up—before the January effective date for card fees.
