The Hoover City Schools Board of Education voted unanimously to hire Melinda Buck as the district's chief school financial officer, with her three-year contract to begin July 1, 2025.
Board attorney Mark Boardman told the board the district had posted the vacancy in accordance with Alabama law and that the search produced one candidate who rose above others. "We recommend Melinda Buck, your accounting director, to be your next CSFO," Boardman said during the meeting.
The motion to hire Buck was made by board member Mister Kendrick and included authorization for Kendrick to sign the contract on behalf of the board. Ms. Nel performed the roll call and the board president announced the vote was unanimous in favor of hiring Buck.
Buck, who has served as the district's accounting director, addressed the board after the vote. "I am deeply honored and humbled to accept the role of the Chief Financial Officer for Hoover City Schools," she said, thanking her family and her predecessor for mentorship and pledging to work “in purpose, collaboration, and shared commitment to the success of every student.”
Board attorney Mark Boardman referenced Alabama Code section 16-13A-4 when explaining the legal requirement for the board to fill the CSFO vacancy. Superintendent Doctor Maddox was present during the discussion; Michelle McCabe, the district's current CSFO, also participated in financial presentations earlier in the meeting and will be succeeded by Buck on July 1.
The board placed the hiring in the context of an open, competitive process that the attorney said complied with state law. No additional details about salary or contract terms beyond the three-year length and the July 1 start date were provided during the public meeting.
The hire concludes the board's personnel actions for the evening; other items on the agenda included budget and capital-plan presentations and several procurement votes.
