Summary
The commission authorized purchase of 13 Motorola M500 in-car camera units at $117,011.60 for the police MARC patrol fleet, funded from the Public Safety Sales Tax. The system includes two cameras per vehicle, local server storage, and recurring annual software fees from Motorola.
The Pittsburg City Commission approved purchase of 13 Motorola M500 in-car camera units for the police department's MARC patrol fleet at a total hardware cost of $117,011.60, police staff told the commission.
A police department representative said the purchase is a one-time hardware acquisition with an ongoing annual recurring cost for Motorolas software access. "This is gonna consist of a one-time purchase of hardware and then an ongoing annual recurring cost from Motorola for their software access rights," the police department representative said.
The department said each marked patrol unit will carry two cameras: one facing outward and one facing the vehicle interior. Video recordings will be stored on the citys local server; department staff said they do not anticipate storage issues. Staff described an automatic download process when vehicles return to the department parking area over a Wi-Fi connection so officers will not need to manually offload footage.
The purchase will be paid from the Public Safety Sales Tax. The motion to approve was made by Commissioner Stu and seconded by Commissioner Cheryl; the commission approved the purchase by voice vote with all members voting "aye." The department said 13 marked units will each be equipped with the system.
