At its April 8 meeting the Sandpoint Arts, Culture & Preservation Commission reviewed results from recent public‑art competitions and outlined next steps for artist selection.
Chairwoman Ellie Sosnes said, "The art call for the big belly monster program closed on March 31. We received about 90 submissions each," and that she and a colleague had scanned the submissions for the selection panel to review. Commissioners discussed scheduling a selection panel in June or calling a special meeting if needed to meet installation timelines.
Sosnes said she presented the spring Silver Box proposal to the SURA board on April 1, and that the board approved a total budget of $3,600 for the project. She added that she had sent a draft RFP to the mayor and that staff would finalize the timeline. The contract with the current Silver Box artist requires the existing artwork to remain until May 23; Sosnes said she requested that new artwork be installed no later than June 30.
The commission discussed using the same RFP template from the previous cycle, working with staff (including Cheryl) to publicize the call, and preparing a digital outreach packet for local arts organizations. Commissioners agreed that each selection should include an alternate artist recommendation for City Council to consider if council chooses a different finalist.
No final artist selections were announced at the meeting. Staff will finalize the RFP and public outreach schedule and return with proposed panel dates and scoring materials.
