Josephine County’s airports manager told commissioners the county should renew a sole-source contract with the vendor that installed and maintains the airport’s Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS). The board agreed to move the item forward to the Wednesday business session (WBS) for formal processing.
The airports manager said the vendor — identified in the meeting as DBT — installed the county’s AWOS about five years ago and is the sole source for continued maintenance. The proposed contract covers three years at a total cost of roughly $17,000, or about $5,700 per year; the manager said the annual increase over the prior contract is approximately $667.
The manager explained the operational importance of the contract: “If they're not calibrated, the FAA gets notification to shut down our instrument landing,” a point commissioners acknowledged when discussing the item. Staff told the board the prior contract expired Dec. 31, 2024, and that the county had been operating without an active contract.
No formal vote on contract award occurred at the meeting; commissioners instructed staff to move the item to the WBS for final consideration and procurement processing.
