Council Backs Staff Review of Historical Marker Request for Henry Hall Wilson

Monroe — The Monroe City Council instructed staff to work with local historic partners to draft proposed language and locations for a historical marker honoring Henry Hall Wilson, a Monroe native who served in the White House and later returned to the city.
City Manager Watson introduced Dan Shive, who requested the marker. Shive told the council that Wilson worked in the White House for Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, was involved in organizing Southern Democrats around presidential initiatives during the 1960s and later served as president of the Chicago Board of Trade before returning to Monroe and running for the U.S. Senate.
Shive suggested potential locations including the Henry Hall Wilson (Sykes) House on Franklin Street and a lot next to a church on Church Street where the Hall Wilson family had ties; he also recounted personal recollections about Wilson and his wife. Council members expressed support and suggested staff consult Union County historic preservation groups to identify the most historically appropriate site and recommended draft marker language.
A motion directing staff to contact historic preservation partners and propose marker language and locations returned to council for consideration passed by voice vote with no opposition recorded.
Next steps: staff will coordinate with historic partners, draft proposed marker language and present suggested locations and wording to the council for formal approval.
