Camp Emmanuel leaders update commissioners on Family Life Center construction

Pastor Scott Hobbs and project lead Dave Stormont updated the Dare County Board of Commissioners on April 16 about the Family Life Center at Camp Emmanuel, a multi-building project that includes 11 cabins and a new dining/meeting building with a commercial kitchen.
Stormont said the cabins are complete and the new Family Life Center is in the stage of rough electrical, HVAC and plumbing work. He told commissioners the congregation and volunteer contributors expanded the project scope during design so the facility could serve broader community outreach, and that funding to finish insulation and sheetrock is in hand. Further interior fit-out — kitchen equipment, furniture and finishing touches — will proceed as additional funding is secured.
“We're finishing our rough-ins with electrical, HVAC and plumbing. That's where the project stands right now,” Stormont said, adding that construction advanced more rapidly than the earlier 10-year pace used for the cabins. Commissioners thanked the volunteers and county staff who aided permitting and inspections during the project.
Why it matters: The Family Life Center is intended to host retreats and community outreach programs and to reduce pressure on church facilities during camp events; the center may also host regional groups.
What’s next: Project leaders said they will continue fundraising to finish interior equipment and expect to return to the county with invitations for commissioners to tour the site when work allows.
