Councilors recommend Gary Jones for Historic Commission; Charlotte Helmer absent

Springfield city councilors interviewed candidates for openings on the Historic Commission and recommended Gary Jones to fill a full four-year term, with follow-up on a second candidate deferred.
Tom Sievers, senior planner and staff liaison to the Historic Commission, told council there are four vacancies on the commission and two applicants available to interview for two full terms. Gary Jones, who moved to Springfield about a year ago and said he brings experience working with nonprofits and special-purpose districts in Washington state, answered questions about how he would contribute to the commission.
Jones described experience in risk management, contracting and small-group budgeting, and said he had become familiar with the Springfield History Museum and its staff. Councilors praised his willingness to learn local history and to support museum programming and community engagement.
Charlotte Helmer, a former Historic Commission member whose term ended in December, was not present. Staff said she works for ODOT and that council leadership could consider her reappointment at the next agenda review; councilors indicated they were comfortable reviewing her at that meeting.
Council consensus at the work session was to advance Gary Jones’ appointment to the consent calendar for formal approval at the next regular meeting.
Sievers noted the commission’s work supports local history programs and partnerships with schools and tribal voices, and said the Mill Race project remains an important local historic and habitat resource.
