Williamston Community Schools’ board considered several bond-funded projects at its meeting, including a recommended furniture purchase for the middle school, preliminary elevation renderings for Explorer Elementary and ongoing planning for a district softball facility.
The board heard that middle-school classroom furniture bids were evaluated over several months, with staff recommending a vendor identified as the lowest bidder and with whom the district has prior positive experience. Staff placed physical samples of the proposed furniture at the back of the boardroom for members to inspect. Deb Le Flore, identified in the discussion as principal at the middle school, and Steve Delp, identified as a high-school leader, visited a manufacturer’s showroom during the vetting process.
Officials said the furniture purchase will proceed in two phases: an initial classroom phase intended to arrive and be installed this summer if approved, and a second phase next year to replace non-classroom furniture with less disruption. One vendor’s bid (NBS) was submitted after packet publication; the completed NBS bid was provided as a handout at the meeting.
Separately, staff showed the board the first draft elevation renderings for Explorer Elementary, described as preliminary images showing what the building might look like from multiple perspectives. Staff emphasized the drawings are an early draft and that further work remains before adoption.
The softball facility planning is ongoing: staff presented a site layout showing proposed locations for fields and described utility access issues (sewer, water, electricity) that will require trenching and may disrupt parking lots during construction. The board was told more details and fine-tuning would be presented next month.
Bond funds also support maintenance equipment. Brandon, identified in the meeting as the maintenance and custodial director, presented three bids for a new tractor and recommended the lowest bid; the purchase would come from the allocation set aside for maintenance equipment within the bond proceeds.
No final bond-related purchases were approved during the meeting; staff said several of these items — including the furniture recommendation — will return to the board for formal approval at a future meeting.
Board members were given an opportunity to inspect furniture samples and ask questions during the presentation.
