York City SD athletics director says field work delayed by weather; spring teams using alternate sites

Director Glover Brown reported at the April committee meeting that work on the district's new athletic field is behind schedule because of recent weather.

Brown, the district's athletics director, told committee members that concrete curb and pad work is finished but one interior concrete pour remains. She said crews had planned to lay a 6-inch stone base and pave the ramp access before installing turf, but rain has repeatedly forced delays. "If everything's okay, they'll lay the turf carpet down, and that take 3 to 5 days, and then 2 and a half weeks after that to complete that process," Brown said, adding she expects the schedule to slip at least another week because of the weather.

Why it matters: The field delays affect multiple spring programs and require teams to find alternative venues. Brown said the scoreboard installation and electrical hookups are next on the list and electricians who have attended site meetings are coordinating where to attach lines for new boards.

Brown said the fencing and backstop poles have been installed and that crews planned to re-smooth areas torn up during earlier work and by vehicle traffic before turf installation. She described an inspection window scheduled in mid-April to confirm the turf base is settled and safe for the subsequent paving and turf work. "They will inspect it before they do any more anything more to it to make sure it's settled," Brown said.

On teams and participation: Brown also reviewed winter and spring sports results and rosters. She said varsity baseball has 20 players after consolidating junior-varsity slots, softball's roster is 16 with two ineligible players this week, boys volleyball has 21 across varsity and JV with two ineligible, and track and field listed 71 students on the roster with four ineligible this week. She stressed academic eligibility enforcement tied to study-hall attendance: "If the students are not going to attend, then they cannot run, play, or jump, or whatever. So they will be ineligible..." Brown said the district has tracked nine study-hall sessions this year and coaches are communicating expectations to athletes ahead of season starts.

Coaches and recognition: Brown praised several coaches and student achievements, noting the boys basketball program reached state-level competition and singling out student athletes performing at invitational meets. She also thanked Aramark for catering the winter sports banquet.

Next steps: Brown said, barring additional weather delays, contractors are aiming for late May for full field readiness but cautioned that timeline is weather-dependent. Team leaders and facilities staff will continue to coordinate alternative fields until on-site work is complete.
