District to purchase accessible playground for Freemansburg Elementary with church, PTA and district contributions

District staff told the facilities committee they will seek board approval on April 28 to purchase a playground for Freemansburg Elementary using a combination of a donation from Grace Church, PTA contributions and a district share.
Staff said the total playground structure cost is about $70,000 and that the district contribution would be approximately $19,000; the district contribution would cover site preparation, surfacing and freight so fundraising dollars are maximized toward the play structure itself. The committee noted the district has previously provided similar site preparation support when PTAs and community donors raised funds for equipment.
Committee members asked whether the proposed playground would be accessible to students with disabilities. Staff said the structure will include ground‑level play events and accessible surfacing; although it will not include large ramps that lead from ground level to the top of the structure, the surfacing will be ASTM certified and, staff said, compliant with ADA guidance for accessibility. The staff presentation said the school’s staff, including the lighthouse team and several IU classrooms, participated in selecting the structure and colors.
Staff said the new playground is expected to be installed and ready for the August start of the school year. The committee did not take a vote at the meeting; staff said the purchase and funding plan will be on the April 28 board agenda for approval.
