Trash services: The council approved a three-year renewal with J & J Trash for municipal trash collection. The award was presented as a renewal of the existing contract with an estimated baseline cost shown in meeting materials of $467,711; the contract will be adjusted annually by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and the council referenced a 3% adjustment in the vote language.
Stormwater pond maintenance: After a competitive bid, the council awarded the stormwater pond lawn maintenance contract to James Enterprises. The lowest responsible bid quoted $48,720 annually for six mowings covering 39 stormwater ponds. The award includes payment for three prior missed mowings ($25,200) and an optional additional mowing cycle at $8,120 if exercised.
Town Hall improvements: The council approved Phase 1 of Town Hall improvements, which includes front-lobby glass and wall work and access control upgrades. Porter Construction was awarded the building/wall/glass work for $62,990 and Strat Security was awarded access-control equipment and installation for $25,409.19. Council members noted the awards are within the budgeted amount for Phase 1.
Lease renewal: The council voted to renew the Mount Airy Pharmacy lease under the same terms as the existing agreement; staff reported no substantive changes to rent or other lease conditions.
Other contract notes: Councilmembers asked about vendor performance and procurement details. Staff said J & J had provided satisfactory service and that the stormwater incumbent could not complete all mowings last season due to personnel issues; the new contract includes prior cycles to make the town whole for missed work.
What’s next: Contracts will be finalized and executed by town staff. The council directed staff to oversee contractor performance and to return to council with any issues.
