District details Read to Achieve summer reading camps, student selection and curriculum

Lenoir County Public Schools outlined a summer reading program under Read to Achieve: three district sites, July 7–30 schedule, required 72 hours of reading instruction delivered by licensed teachers, targeted slots for grades 1–3 and use of UFLI and I-Ready curricula.
Lenoir County Public Schools presented details of its Read to Achieve summer reading program and invited board questions at the March meeting. The program is scheduled for July 7–30 with a makeup day on July 31; student hours are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and staff hours are 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
District staff said the program is designed to meet the statutory Read to Achieve requirement of 72 hours of reading instruction delivered by licensed teachers chosen for demonstrated reading outcomes. Volunteer mentors may read with students outside the 72 required hours, but the core instruction must be provided by licensed staff and align with each local school administrative unit’s literacy intervention plan.
Three host sites correspond to the district’s three tracks. Northwest Elementary will serve Northwest, Northeast and Southeast tracks; Banks Elementary will serve the North track (Banks, Continuous, Savannah, Pink Hill); Southwood and Moss Hill will serve the South track. Each site will include two first-grade classes, two second-grade classes and three third-grade classes. District membership targets are 108 first graders, 108 second graders and 162 third graders (36/36/54 per site respectively).
Curriculum will include intensive phonics instruction using UFLI (University of Florida Literacy Initiative), accelerated reading comprehension through I‑Ready, sentence-writing and handwriting workshops, morning meetings for relationship building, and aeronautics-themed STEM activities. Students may demonstrate third-grade reading proficiency during camp through one of four measures: completing the third-grade reading portfolio, achieving a 725 Lexile on in‑class benchmarks, passing the Read to Achieve test at the end of camp, or demonstrating a 725 Lexile on a state‑approved alternative assessment.
District staff said teachers with higher reading proficiency are selected first for assignments and that administrators must carefully track instruction hours to meet the statutory requirement.
