Lenoir County Public Schools honors students, teachers and presenters at March board meeting

The Lenoir County Board of Education’s March meeting highlighted student and staff achievements across the district.
Superintendent and board members presented awards and recognitions for scholarship recipients and competition winners. Melissa Espino of North Lenoir High School was recognized as a Goodnight scholarship recipient at NC State University and as the J.A. Campbell scholarship recipient at Campbell University. Another student was introduced as a Park Scholar and a finalist for the Morehead-Cain scholarship; speakers noted the Park Scholarship selects a very small number of recipients each year.
Administrators announced seven district educators recently earned National Board Certification; their names will be added to a permanent plaque. The board named several students selected for Governor’s School summer residential programs, including Alicia Gonzales Gutierrez (Early College High School) and Braden Barnett (South Lenoir High School), among others.
Student competition honors were presented: finalists and winners in the Omega Psi Phi Black History Month writing contest, state-level Science Olympiad qualifiers from Whittington Middle School, and top finishers from DECA competitions. The board also recognized two students who placed at the state science fair.
Lenoir County Public Schools honored Crystal Carlisle, director of middle grades education, for receiving the Zora Ellis scholarship from the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, a $10,000 award that will help fund doctoral study in educational leadership at East Carolina University.
The meeting included two presentations showcasing curriculum work. At the elementary level, Banks Elementary students presented a digital learning showcase that doubled participation from 51 to 103 students after teachers gave students choice in topic and built class time into the project. Students explained research projects that used data collection, videos and slide presentations on subjects ranging from soccer skills to dance and women’s basketball.
District fine-arts staff presented highlights of Arts in Our Schools Month: All-County Chorus, All-County Art Show and All-County Band weekend events, noting clinician-led rehearsals, visual art displays and concerts that involved hundreds of students.
