The board considered recommendations from a community committee to name the district’s upcoming schools on the Air Depot/Cobell site. The committee solicited 97 submissions from the public, narrowed the list using published criteria and recommended Pleasant Grove for the new elementary school and Horizon for the new middle school.
Several trustees praised the vetting work but some asked for more time to review the shortlist and to ensure the names did not duplicate nearby or statewide facility names. One trustee said the committee did a good job but asked to see more of the submitted list; another raised geographical associations and said Pleasant Grove is the name of a township in a different county and wanted more consideration.
A motion to table the naming decision to the following month passed. Trustees said the committee’s recommendation is advisory and the board retained final naming authority.
The board will revisit the naming item at a future meeting after additional review.
