Braintree accepts $2,000 donation from youth soccer group for Doheny Field improvements

The Braintree Town Council unanimously approved acceptance of a $2,000 donation from Braintree Youth Soccer for improvements to Doheny Field at East Middle School at its April 7 meeting.
Christopher Griffin, assistant recreation director, told the council the total cost of the proposed work is about $5,800, based on an estimate from RAD Sports, and that Braintree Youth Soccer is offering $2,000 toward that cost. Griffin said the field is heavily used from March into November and needs work to reduce injury risk and improve playability. He identified Scott Lyons, the town's grounds superintendent, as having spearheaded the project.
Adam Ringus, president of Braintree Youth Soccer, said the organization and town aim to preserve grass play surfaces where possible and that the donation reflects that partnership. Councilors praised the league's volunteer base and new programing: organizers said fall registration opens May 1 and that the league is piloting a "mighty minis" program to introduce pre-K children to soccer, with a free spring clinic already registering about 40 children.
The formal motion to accept the gift referenced authority under Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 44, Section 53A. After a motion and second, the council approved acceptance of the $2,000 donation by unanimous voice vote.
