Mooresville resident seeks wider shoulders, petition to state for safety improvements on Langtree Road

Mary Phillips, who identified herself at the April 7 Town of Mooresville meeting as a resident of 321 Lakeshore Drive and a representative of a neighborhood group called Walk Safe Langtree, used the public comment period to describe repeated near misses along Langtree Road and to announce a petition seeking state action to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety.
Phillips told the board the road in the West Side area is narrow — she measured segments as “15 if it’s 20 feet across” — and said it drops into drainage ditches leaving little or no usable shoulder for people walking or biking. She said the group’s petition will request that the state install drain pipes, flatten out the shoulder and provide 10 to 15 feet of shoulder space so pedestrians do not need to walk in the travel lane. Phillips said the group will take the petition to Raleigh if necessary and invited commissioners and the public to join or advise the effort.
Phillips said the corridor is anchored by Langtree Mall at one end and a marina at the other, and that the area includes several thousand residents. She urged the town to help the effort where possible and described the issue as a quality-of-life and safety matter for families and children who bike in the area.
During public comment Todd Carver, who identified himself as a Raleigh representative, encouraged the effort and suggested Raleigh was a good place to start for the petition. No formal action or referral to staff was recorded in the meeting minutes during the public comment portion.
