Richardson Public Library previews renovated space, new services and outreach van ahead of Q1 2026 re-opening

The Richardson Public Library updated the City Council on National Library Week activities, programming successes and the ongoing renovation of the main library building, saying construction remains on track for an early-2026 reopening.
Jenny (library director) told the council the library earned the Texas Municipal Library Directors Association’s Achievement of Excellence in Libraries award for the twentieth consecutive year and described outreach metrics: the library participated in 57 outreach events, reached more than 19,000 people and circulated more than 834,000 physical and digital items in the prior year.
Library staff outlined new and returning services planned for the renovated building and for the coming months: - Makerspace and technology: expanded makerspace with plans to acquire a larger 3-D printer, a laser cutter/engraver, dye-sublimation printer, podcast equipment and sewing machines. Staff said the makerspace will support new classes and hands-on learning. - Library programming: Richardson Reads One Book selection for the year is Wild Chocolate by Rowan Jacobson; author events are scheduled for Sept. 16–17 with school workshops and a public lecture. Summer reading programming and expanded arts, STEAM and community-circle offerings were described as part of a broader engagement push. - Outreach van (Rover): staff said Rover is now fully operational and has been deployed to school and community events, and will attend city events such as the Parks Extravaganza and local festivals. - Seed library: launched in the past year, staff said the library distributed roughly 4,300 free seed packets and that the seed-library announcement was one of the library’s most successful social-media posts.
On the renovation, Director Jenny and staff showed recent construction photos and architectural renderings. They said work has proceeded on new entrances, mechanical systems, elevator areas and a new fire-suppression system. Staff described interior features that include a new multipurpose room, a podcasting room, children’s-area public art and a community-painted mural. The city’s schedule and the library’s presentation both described a target to re-open in the first quarter of 2026.
Council members asked about schedule and square footage; staff said the renovated library will be roughly 84,000 square feet and confirmed the current completion projection remains in “Q1” of 2026.
Ending: Library leaders asked for council support during budget discussions for programs, makerspace equipment and modest additional staffing to support new services when the renovated building reopens.
