Finance Committee tables TIF ordinance for Dewey Road improvements

At its April 7, 2025 meeting, the Amherst Finance Committee voted 6-0 to table Ordinance 25-14, an ordinance to create a tax increment financing (TIF) incentive district for Dewey Road improvements.
The mayor asked counsel to delay consideration for two weeks so the administration could better prepare the legislation and provide required notice to the schools. "I would, ask counsel if we could, table this for 2 weeks, bring it back to the next committee meeting. We'd like to better prepare the legislation, and this would also give us time to, get the the notice out to the schools," the mayor said.
The motion to table was made by Councilmember Janek and seconded by Councilmember Mayhorn. The chair called the vote; the motion passed 6-0. Committee members did not enter extended discussion on the merits of the TIF during the meeting.
A TIF district would change how incremental tax revenues are used to fund local improvements; the ordinance text and additional legislative details were not debated at the committee. The mayor’s request to revise the draft and notify schools was the stated reason for the postponement.
The item is scheduled to return to the Finance Committee in two weeks for further consideration and possible amendment.
