Timberlake Fire Department earns ISO Class 3 rating; new rating takes effect July 1

Timberlake Fire Department Chief Fletcher told the Person County Board of Commissioners on April 7 that the department’s Insurance Service Office rating improved to Class 3 following a January inspection.
“ISO… it’s insurance service office,” Chief Fletcher said, explaining the rating system that insurers use to help set home insurance rates. He said the department previously held a combined Class 4/9 rating and scored a 74, which placed it “right in the middle of a 3.” He added Timberlake is “about 5 points away from obtaining the 2.”
The chief said graders evaluate multiple components, including needed fire flows for large buildings, emergency communications and telecommunicators, fire department staffing and equipment, training, water supply and hydrant testing, and community risk reduction such as fire prevention and investigations. He thanked county staff, the board and mutual aid partners, and offered a form residents could send to insurers documenting the new rating.
Commissioners acknowledged the achievement during the meeting. Chief Fletcher said the new Class 3 rating becomes effective July 1.
The presentation was informational; no board action was recorded on the ISO rating during the meeting.
