The Tempe Elementary School District governing board voted April 2 to adopt the Tri‑District calendar package for school years 2026–2029, aligning calendars with Kyrene and Tempe Union school districts.
Mike McGinney and district staff described the Tri‑District effort as intended to align calendars to support families with children across the three districts and to explore whether alignment supports student outcomes. "The three districts did meet…to look at trying to, as closely as possible, align our calendars, for the sake of our community," McGinney said.
Board discussion focused on family impacts. Governing board member Mr. Cherry said the two‑week spring and fall breaks are challenging for parents and child care arrangements and questioned whether the shorter summer meaningfully reduces learning loss. He also noted survey response skew: Kyrene and Tempe Union families largely opposed the earlier proposal while TD3 families reported support, but the district's survey turnout and low Spanish‑language participation suggested the results may not have reflected the full parent population.
"When we talk about shorter summers, we are concerned about learning loss… I don't think that extra two weeks is moving the needle all that much," Cherry said, urging the district to do more follow‑up with families about break plans and childcare availability.
Despite concerns, the board approved the three‑calendar package on a voice vote.
