Senate members pay tribute to former Representative Gene Ward, observe moment of silence

The Senate opened a series of floor remarks and announcements by noting the death of former state Representative Gene Ward earlier that morning and observing a moment of silence in his memory.

Senator Awa announced the request to adjourn on a rising vote to observe a moment of silence for Representative Gene Ward, saying Ward "served in the House of Representatives for 27 years, first getting elected in 1990" and noting he was 82 years old. Senators across the chamber rose on points of personal privilege to speak about Ward's public service and community ties.

Senator DeCoite thanked Principal Fred Murphy and others for relief efforts and, on behalf of colleagues, expressed aloha for the people of Lahaina. Several senators described Ward as a dedicated public servant who engaged deeply with constituents and championed Native Hawaiian issues.

Senator Lee said Ward was "someone who cared deeply about Hawaii's culture" and praised his willingness to stand alone on issues he believed in. Senator Fevella spoke of a longtime personal friendship and Ward's community engagement. Other senators recalled Ward's commitment to service, his book Broken Promises (as referenced on the floor), and his advocacy for Native Hawaiian families.

Later in the session, Senator Wakai moved that the Senate stand in recess, leaving the journal open until 8 p.m. for receipt of standing committee reports and that the Senate adjourn on a rising vote observing a moment of silence in Ward's memory; Senator Descartes seconded the motion. The motion was adopted by the chamber and members rose for the moment of silence. The Senate reconvened with plans to meet again at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 8, and the chair asked members to join in honoring Representative Ward.
