The Los Angeles City Council on April 4 celebrated L.A.’s Best, an after-school program that council members and program leaders said provides academic support, food security and safe after-school hours for thousands of students citywide.
Councilmember Eunice Hernández introduced a resolution formally recognizing Wednesday, April 29, as L.A.’s Best Day in Los Angeles, and presented staff from the program, parents and students who described the program’s impact. “L.A.’s Best is a lifesaver,” Hernández said, adding that the program operates in every council district and serves students in neighborhoods with high needs.
Michelle Broadnax, identified in remarks as the president and CEO of L.A.’s Best, told the council the program partners with the city, the Los Angeles Unified School District and private sector funders and currently serves tens of thousands of elementary students in low-income neighborhoods. “With your support we can ensure more children across Los Angeles have the opportunities they deserve,” Broadnax said.
Monte Vista Elementary Principal Lucy Hunt and parents Maria Ríos and others described the program as essential both for child safety and for parents’ ability to work. Student speakers, including Rubí González and Sarahí Torres, described academic help, clubs and sports, and said the program gave them new opportunities such as robotics and field trips.
The council read a resolution recognizing April 29 as L.A.’s Best Day. The transcript records the presentation of the resolution but does not show a recorded vote on the proclamation in the provided excerpt.
Program leaders played a video for the council and asked for continued support, noting L.A.’s Best provides free after-school services to families and offers before-school programming at some sites. Councilmembers applauded the students and staff and said they would continue to back funding for the program.
