Joint Fisheries Work Group hears quota-management update and readies for ComFish panels

The Kodiak Island Borough–City of Kodiak Joint Fisheries Work Group reported on local groundfish conditions and quota-management efforts and encouraged public attendance at the ComFish conference April 9–11.
Members of the Kodiak Island Borough and City of Kodiak Joint Fisheries Work Group met March 26 and provided an update to the assembly on March 26 activities during the April 3 assembly meeting.
Julie Bonnie of the Alaska Ground Fish Data Bank provided an update on local groundfish fisheries; the group noted that pollock season is winding down. Members also heard from Linda Fried of the Kodiak Fisheries Development Association, which manages quota for the Kodiak Archipelago. Work group members said the association can acquire quota and lease it to local entities to keep fishing opportunities local.
The assembly's fisheries representative encouraged residents to attend ComFish (KalmFish/ComFish) from April 9–11, where state and federal legislators and National Marine Fisheries Service representatives are scheduled to present. The work group also selected co-chairs for the joint body: Mister Griffin will co-chair for the Kodiak Island Borough and Mister Haynes will co-chair for the City of Kodiak.
The session was presented as informational and no formal assembly action was taken on fisheries items at the April 3 meeting.
