Mayor Scott Arndt read a proclamation at the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly meeting on April 3 declaring April 2025 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month and called on residents to support local programs that assist survivors.
On behalf of the Kodiak Women's Resource and Crisis Center (KWRCC), Emily Tiller thanked the borough and described local need. "In 2024 alone, KWRCC worked with 26 victims of sexual assault in Kodiak, helping them to find safety so they could begin healing," Tiller said. She added that many survivors do not reach out for help and that the center provides shelter, legal advocacy and support navigating complex systems.
Tiller urged community members to talk about healthy relationships and consent and to support local services. She invited residents to the Choose Respect March on Wednesday, April 16 at noon, starting at the auditorium, to show community support.
The proclamation text, read by the mayor, cites national and state statistics and urges residents to increase awareness and support services. It called on perpetrators to be held accountable and encouraged participation in local activities and programs aimed at prevention and survivor support.
The assembly presented the proclamation to KWRCC and thanked the organization for its work serving survivors in Kodiak.
