Council endorses state bill on school food and asks staff to develop local policy

The Los Angeles City Council on Sept. 4 voted to support California Senate Bill 19 (SB 19), legislation that would limit the availability of junk food and carbonated beverages in locations serving school-aged children. Councilmember Jan Perry introduced the special item and said the measure was intended to improve nutrition at city facilities and align city practice with public-health goals.
Councilmember Jack Weiss and others asked that the resolution be split: the council voted in support of SB 19 and referred the second clause — directing staff to develop a city policy limiting junk food and carbonated beverages at city-run programs — to committee (Health and Education) for study and policy development. The council approved the SB 19 support vote (12 ayes) and agreed to consider a local policy through the committee process.
