Parks and recreation previews spring sports, large egg hunt and legacy resident trip; city schedules community giveaways

Director Maxwell, Recreation and Leisure, told Ward 1 attendees that spring sports open in April at Star Park with ceremonies at 10 a.m. and the first games at 11 a.m., and he listed baseball, soccer, tee ball and softball among the offerings.

Maxwell said the department will host an autism walk and return the Food and Wine festival near the fountain; he said Spring Fest will include what the department described as one of the largest egg hunts on the South Side and that organizers distributed over 20,000 eggs at past events. He asked parents to note that registration for some programs opens at 8 a.m. on April 14 and that slots often fill quickly.

The department said legacy residents will have a spring trip to Chattanooga, Tennessee, with free registration for Forest Park residents and a $25 fee for nonresidents; the bus will leave at 9 a.m. and return at 7 p.m., officials said. Maxwell asked residents to be ready online at 8 a.m. on registration opening dates for some programs because slots can fill within minutes.

Council aide Miss Dixon announced a clothing giveaway the following day and a spring gospel concert in April at the amphitheater. Council remarks also noted a forthcoming food giveaway at Forest Park High School supported by funds raised with the Atlanta Community Food Bank. The council reminded residents the Ward 1 meeting returns every third Thursday of the month.
