Assembly Bill 314 would expand the career‑pathway approach used for the Teacher Academy College Pathway to health care occupations by establishing reimbursement of mandatory tuition/fees and licensing charges for eligible students who complete approved pathway programs and commit to employment in Nevada health care settings.
Sponsor Rebecca Edgeworth told the committee that Nevada faces shortages of physicians, nurses and allied health professionals and emphasized retention: students trained in Nevada are more likely to stay and practice here. Testimony in support came from higher education institutions (UNR, UNLV, NSHE), nursing and medical workforce organizations, Intermountain Health, High Sierra Area Health Education Center and educators. Several speakers cited data showing Nevada's shortages and the benefits of in‑state training and retention. The conceptual amendment discussed by counsel would allow health care pathway students to access the same treasurer‑held $10 million account established for the teacher pipeline, provided program completion and service‑back requirements are met.
No opposition callers registered; workforce and higher education representatives expressed readiness to help implement the program. The committee closed the hearing without a recorded committee vote.
