The City Council approved a staff recommendation to adjust the city attorney’s compensation to better align with regional peers. Human Resources staff reported that the city attorney’s salary had not received scheduled adjustments since 2022 and was behind market benchmarks.
Human Resources Director Samantha Sacrani explained the adjustment was intended to bring the position closer to peer agencies. Staff described a market comparison showing the city attorney’s pay had fallen behind both the average and median for comparable jurisdictions; staff recommended a 17 percent increase to address the gap and said the change would move the position near the peer median. Staff estimated the fiscal-year impact to the current budget at approximately $27,811.72.
Public comment: several members of the public supported the increase. Developers and local residents said the city attorney has been an effective legal adviser on projects and local ordinances and that competitive compensation helps retain experienced counsel.
Council action and next steps: after brief discussion about comparator agencies and the budget impact, council approved the salary adjustment. Staff will complete the budget amendment and implement the compensation change in the city payroll system.
Ending: staff said the adjustment aims to make the city attorney’s pay competitive regionally; council asked staff to complete required budget changes and return with implementation paperwork.
