The Open Space Committee discussed a small wooded parcel on Montgomery Street (about 8.27 acres) that had been listed for sale but whose online listing appears to have been removed. Committee members noted a for-sale sign remained on the property and that they observed what appeared to be activity at the site.
The chairman said the property is surrounded by residential lots and conservation areas near Elders Pond, meaning it would likely remain an “island” of undeveloped land if not acquired in combination with adjacent parcels. A list price seen earlier was about $250,000, though committee members said the town does not have funds to buy property at this time because capital needs (for example a new fire station) are taking priority.
Committee members agreed to contact the listing realtor to check the current status and to keep the parcel on the agenda so conservation partners or trusts can be alerted if it comes back to market. The committee noted that acquisition by the town would require funding approval at town meeting.
Why it matters: the parcel is near existing conservation land and wetlands; its sale could lead to new residential development that would be difficult to reverse without acquisition funds or private trust interest.
