Grimes County Animal Rescue reports rising intakes, adoptions and spay/neuter clinics

Representatives of Grimes County Animal Rescue updated the commissioners court on April 2 about the rescue’s first‑quarter activities and partnerships with county livestock enforcement and neighboring shelters.
Jeff Priestley, board president, introduced coordinator Elora Alexander and supervisor Jayla McKay, who said intake and adoptions have increased since the rescue stepped up response work with the county livestock officer. Alexander reported 79 adoptions in the current quarter and a total of 278 adoptions since the rescue opened in 2023. She said the organization now averages shorter shelter stays — roughly 23 days for dogs and 15 for cats this year — and runs one to two spay/neuter clinics per month.
Alexander outlined community outreach and partnerships: regular adoption events at Tractor Supply and Petco, coordinated rescue work with the Navasota shelter, and new fundraising and sponsorship programs that cover adoption fees for longer‑term residents to increase their placement chances. The rescue also launched a foster program — staff said 17 dogs and four bottle‑fed kittens were in foster care — and described low‑cost vaccine clinics planned with veterinarians.
Commissioners praised the group’s increased activity and said the court would consider support requests if brought forward. Rescue leaders asked for volunteers and said they process volunteer applications at the rescue site.
