Resident urges clearer definitions and limits in proposed indoor pig ordinance during public comment

Ed Wells used public comment time at the Government Performance & Finance Committee’s April 1 meeting to urge clearer language and geographic limits in a proposed indoor pig ordinance.
"I put together some things that I think are important to think about as you're building this new sort of indoor pig law," Wells said, noting he had emailed materials to staff in advance. He suggested the ordinance should be unambiguous about definitions and recommended limiting any new regulations to specific areas of the city rather than citywide coverage.
Wells also expressed concern about delegating too much discretion to animal-control staff. "They've demonstrated some problems with that and it is going to be much better for the city if the council limits their discretion and gets things into law that are unambiguous," he said. He added that pigs should not be regulated using the same standards as dogs.
Wells' remarks were delivered during the committee's public-comment period and were an advisory input to the committee; the transcript includes no committee action tied to his comments during the April 1 meeting.
