The Ocala Historic Preservation Advisory Board tabled a Certificate of Appropriateness application to replace an asphalt shingle roof with a Galvalume metal roof at 825 Southeast Eighth Street after staff determined the proposed material was not appropriate for the contributing 1938 house.
Bria Miller presented the application and said the property is a contributing structure built in 1938 in a frame vernacular style. She said the applicant requested replacement of an existing asphalt shingle roof with a “Galvalume 41 classic metal roof.” Based on a review against the Secretary of the Interior Standards and the City of Ocala COA criteria (section 94-82(g)), Miller said staff found the alteration “not appropriate” and recommended denial of the proposed material.
A board member asked whether asphalt shingles were original to the 1938 construction; Miller said the earlier roof material was asbestos shingles and that asphalt shingles are not original. The applicant was not present to address the board; a motion to table the item was made and seconded and carried.
The board did not take a final approval or denial; staff noted the applicant may return with alternative materials or additional documentation to demonstrate the compatibility of the proposed metal roof with the structure and surrounding streetscape.
