Huber Heights commission approves minutes, excuses absences and endorses flexible interview times

The Huber Heights Culture and Diversity Citizens Action Commission on April 3 approved the minutes from its March 6 meeting, voted to excuse two absent commissioners and recommended flexibility in scheduling interviews for prospective commission members.
The commission’s most immediate business included a voice vote to accept the March 6 minutes. Commissioner Nube Al Azir moved to accept the minutes; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote with one member recorded as abstaining. The commission also moved and seconded a motion to excuse the absences of Yolanda Stevens and Gloria Owens; that motion carried by voice vote.
Commissioners discussed the remaining vacancy on the nine-member commission. Jeffrey, the city staff liaison, said the individual recommended by human resources lives outside Huber Heights and therefore was ineligible. The commission agreed to continue seeking a resident to fill the seat and deferred a decision on nominating a permanent chair and vice chair until the commission is closer to full membership.
Commissioner Nube Al Azir proposed a formal recommendation that interviews for prospective members be offered outside normal work hours to increase participation by residents who work during the day. "I'd like to make a recommendation that there's flexibility made in the interview process of further commission members, looking into evening hours to try to accommodate at least one of our availabilities," Al Azir said. The motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
City staff said they would forward the commission’s recommendation up the chain of command so staff and human resources could evaluate whether interviews can be scheduled after regular business hours.
Looking ahead, staff reminded commissioners the commission typically provides a council update three times a year; the next scheduled council update for the commission is in June. Staff also said he will circulate proposed May meeting dates to cover business during his planned parental leave in mid-May.
The meeting adjourned at 7:32 p.m.
