Planning staff announces Platt Tracker update and tree-and-shrub ordinance clarification

Houston Planning & Development Department told the Planning Commission the online Platt Tracker tool will be replaced mid-April and announced clarifications to the tree-and-shrub ordinance to keep trees away from power lines using CenterPoint guidance.
At the April 3 meeting the Houston Planning & Development Department director, Von Tran, told commissioners the department will launch a new version of the Platt Tracker online service on Monday, April 14, 2025; online payments will be suspended from 5 p.m. on April 10 through the relaunch on April 14. Access to the current tracker will also be interrupted on the morning of April 11.
Tran also said the department, Houston Parks and Recreation’s Urban Forestry Division and CenterPoint had worked together to clarify definitions in the city’s trees-and-shrub ordinance. The clarifications are intended to improve tree selection and placement so trees are not planted where they could grow into power lines and compromise electric service during storms. Tran said the department clarified that an overhead power line is defined as 20 feet from the center of the overhead utility lines, and that CenterPoint’s Right Tree Right Place guidance is available on the ordinance webpage.
