Laguna Beach seeks California Transportation Commission attention for Laguna Canyon undergrounding

Laguna Beach officials plan to meet with members of the California Transportation Commission to discuss a potential undergrounding project for Laguna Canyon Road, Mayor Alex Munaghi said on Fair Game Laguna Beach.
Munaghi said he will join Council Member Kemp to tour the canyon route, describe public-safety impacts and urge regional collaboration on funding and implementation. “We have 3 ways in and out of our city, 2 on PCH, 1 through the Canyon, and this is really a regional issue,” Munaghi said.
The mayor said the visit aims to explain the site, the safety concerns and the need to coordinate with stakeholders at all levels of government. He said the project affects not only Laguna Beach but the broader region and that he hopes to collaborate with the commission and other partners to secure funding.
Munaghi also noted staffing and ad hoc committee history: he previously served on an ad hoc committee addressing undergrounding on Laguna Canyon Road and later moved to other council assignments when Council Member Jones took that role. He said Council Member Wayland had been a past colleague on the ad hoc committee.
Munaghi described the meeting as an effort to build regional support and did not provide a construction schedule or funding commitments in the interview.
