Kootenai County OKs three-month seasonal hire for sheriff's civil unit to cover vacancy

Kootenai County commissioners approved a temporary, seasonal full-time hire in the sheriff’s civil division on April 3 to cover a vacant veil specialist position. Captain Andy Deak told the board the county seeks a retired former employee to return for up to three months to cover workload, vacations and sick leave while the permanent vacancy is filled.
“We are seeking to bring on a seasonal part time temporary, well full time actually, for seasonal work, up to 3 months to fill a veil specialist position,” Captain Andy Deak said. He told commissioners the candidate is a former employee and therefore would require little training; if more time is needed, Deak said he would return to the board to request month-to-month extensions.
Commissioners moved and seconded the request and voted unanimously to approve the seasonal hire. The board noted the action includes a budgeted savings of $5,800 for the current year. Deak asked whether the start date could coincide with the next pay period; commissioners approved an immediate start pending any consent-calendar formalities.
The request was described as a single short-term hire to cover the vacancy; no other temporary hires were requested at this time. The board did not change policy or permanent staffing levels; the hire is time-limited and contingent on any future board direction should more time be required.
