The Winchester City Board of Architectural Review voted to approve exterior modifications to 505 Hammer Street, including repainting the building’s brick and mansard, adding vertical battens and new fascia elements, and installing decorative lighting, the board said.
Applicant Kara Wilkins presented the proposed changes, which include repainting the brick, extending the painted mansard roof around the corner, adding Hardie (fiber cement) vertical batten siding on the primary gable, replacing several storefront doors and windows as tenant needs become known, and renovating upstairs apartments with new windows and doors. Wilkins said the left side of the building has a leased space of roughly 5,000 square feet where a tenant is already lined up.
Board members described the package as a highly descriptive application that improves the building’s visual rhythm and storefront presence. The board found the changes appropriate for the property and noted that painting the brick is acceptable for buildings of the apparent vintage. The motion to approve BAR25-195 as presented passed on a voice vote.
The applicant said some storefront elements on secondary elevations are being left as-is until tenant fit-outs are finalized; those will be upgraded later as tenants are confirmed. Decorative lanterns at both doorways and additional façade lighting were included in the approved plan.
The board did not record an individual roll-call vote in the transcript; the motion carried by voice vote.
