The House Calendar and Rules committee advanced 57 bills to upcoming calendars during a mostly procedural meeting, and took a recorded roll-call on House Bill 601, which passed 11-9.
Committee chair Lady Moody opened the session and noted the size of the docket. "We do have 57 bills on the calendar," she said before asking the clerk to call the roll.
Why it matters: The committee’s action determines which bills appear on floor calendars and when members will consider them, moving legislative proposals closer to final votes or delaying further consideration. Most items on the committee’s docket were placed on Monday or Thursday calendars or on consent calendars; a subset of bills was rolled for one week.
Most of the meeting consisted of brief motions to place bills on calendars and voice votes or unanimous "ayes." Several bills were specifically rolled one week at the start of the session; those include items announced as House Bill 624, House Bill 1197, House Bill 1203 and House Bill 1205, as well as items later noted as House Bill 960 and House Bill 411.
Representative Freeman spoke during consideration of House Bill 601 and indicated he would vote no, saying he had concerns about aspects of the bill that he described as exceeding scientific evidence. The committee took a roll-call vote on House Bill 601; the clerk recorded 11 ayes and 9 nos and the bill was advanced to Monday’s regular calendar.
Other bills were assigned to calendars with little or no debate, either to Monday’s regular calendar, Monday’s consent calendar, Thursday’s regular calendar or Thursday’s consent calendar based on the motions on the floor. Leader Cochran requested one bill be taken off notice to make fewer changes in the Senate, and the committee removed that bill from notice without objection.
Speaker Zachary temporarily presided and several members offered congratulatory remarks while he chaired briefly. Representative Gantt, who had been absent earlier, returned and the committee resumed consideration of his items.
The meeting concluded with members advancing the remaining bills and adjourning after a motion.
