The San Antonio City Council on April 3 approved a $1,335,000 contract for administration of a mitigation grant program to assist small businesses affected by public construction. The council also approved amendments expanding eligibility to include businesses along the New Braunfels corridor phases 1 and 2.
Councilmember Cor and others described the program as a response to repeated construction projects that have limited access and reduced customer traffic for small businesses, citing losses of ticket sales and attendance at cultural venues. Councilmember Miquel Rodríguez proposed and the council adopted an amendment to add affected businesses along the New Braunfels corridor (phase 1 and phase 2) to the eligibility list; staff and council clarified that the amendment was in order and the amendment passed.
The motion to approve the contract with the adopted amendments passed on the consent/regular agenda. Staff said the contract will fund administration of grants that help small businesses mitigate revenue losses stemming from public works, and that staff will implement the amended eligibility criteria during the grant intake process.
