District staff outline annual school safety submittal to Department of Justice; board to approve update on Oct. 28

A district staff member briefed the school board on the district’s annual submittal to the Department of Justice Office of School Safety, saying the report is required each year and mostly updates school-level emergency contacts and procedural links rather than wholesale changes to the district emergency management plan.
The presenter said the annual filing includes updated contacts for each school (custodian, principal, social worker, dean and other staff) and documentation of drills and staff training. The district noted it had updated ALICE drill information and logged staff training and attendee lists. The presenter said one ALICE drill was conducted on Feb. 11 and another scheduled for Oct. 22.
Board members questioned whether the filing requires board approval. Staff said the item will be on the Oct. 28 agenda as an action item for board approval in keeping with state law passed about a decade earlier that created reporting expectations; details of the nine items discussed in July will be considered in the submission. The presenter said much of the report is procedural and provides links to updates done throughout the year.
The submittal will include documentation the district maintains for a forthcoming federal monitor review and to align with revised federal Head Start guidelines, staff added. The district will bring the finalized report to the board for approval on Oct. 28.
