The Kenosha Unified School District curriculum office recommended the school board approve an upgrade of the district’s K–5 math instructional materials to the publisher’s third edition, with an estimated cost of $400,000 to be paid from the teaching and learning budget.
Stacy Cortez led a curriculum review team that recommended staying with the district’s existing math resource and moving from the current second edition to the third edition. The district said many teaching techniques and resources would remain the same while the publisher’s updates would be adopted. Staff said the purchase would affect professional learning for the next year and provide materials for summer learning.
A district packet lists the curriculum review committee as 26 members representing 10 of the district’s 19 elementary schools, staff said. Board members asked whether the materials represented the same “new math” approaches; curriculum staff described the program as emphasizing application of mathematical concepts and deeper teacher practice. The presenter offered board members classroom observation opportunities and additional background material.
Staff asked the board to approve the $400,000 purchase so the district can prepare materials for summer programs and professional learning.
