Kenosha district to propose two introductory high‑school band courses for ninth‑grade beginners

Kenosha Unified School District curriculum staff told the board they will propose two new high‑school band courses designed for students who begin an instrument in ninth grade: Introductory to High School Band and Introductory to High School Band Honors.

The courses are intended to provide targeted instruction so new-to-band ninth graders can be scheduled into classes that match their skill level. Wendy, a district curriculum staff member, said the classes are an entry point and would count as electives. “It would be specifically to appropriately schedule you into the course at your level as a new to band student,” Wendy said.

Staff said there is no additional cost and no staffing implications associated with the two courses. Board members asked whether participation in band or sports could count toward graduation elective or physical education requirements. Wendy said band would count as an elective; she said district policy does not count sport participation for PE credit because of staffing, assessment and equity concerns.

Board members asked for additional information on the district’s committee work on the topic; staff offered to follow up with more context and to provide classroom observation options.
